CARRY THE LIGHT
Heroes
The military played a key role in securing Roanoke during the Fall. Soldiers, officers, engineers, medics and others—some of them stationed on the island, most of them found their way there early on, turning it into a strategic foothold against both the infected and desperate outsiders. Many still see themselves as protectors, upholding their duty, some question the chain of command and their new role in the new world, and others thrive when permission to violence is extended to American soil. Are you a battle-hardened squad leader clinging to discipline in a world where outside the safe zone the rules barely matter? A disillusioned medic who has seen too much death and wonders if saving lives is still worth it? A radio operator intercepting more than just static, catching whispers of threats and cries for help beyond the gates? Or maybe a former officer struggling with the island’s new power balance, torn between loyalty to the mission and the growing influence of civilian rule? The military holds influence, but not as much as they once did—unless, of course, you’re one of those who believe they’re the ones truly pulling the strings.
Sinners
In the lawless chaos of the Fall, prisons became tombs and battlegrounds, but not on Roanoke. The jail there, just like everything else on the island, was isolated and sealed from threats early on. During the first two years the facility was expanded but not many crimes granted full incarnation to its residents. Most were part of the newly formed community of survivors. Until Roanoke’s military got intel about Lincoln Prison.Located in Ohio, the old prison compound was far enough to not pose a direct threat but its slaver community grew in numbers. RGF was tasked with liberating the people and capturing the criminals that run the place. Some convicts were ruthless predators, others were just unlucky souls caught in the spiral of violence. A lot of them were eliminated, but a few dozen of “bad guys” survived the raid and were to be transported to the safe zone to face trials. To be given a second chance or to pay for the hurt they were responsible for. [TBA]
Survivors
The world beyond Roanoke is a nightmare of decay, death and desperation. Those who survived out there had to become something more than just lucky—they had to be smart, ruthless, or both. Some arrived on Roanoke as broken remnants of fallen groups, others as lone wanderers hardened by brutal experiences. The stories they bring with them are often filled with tragedy, loss, and lessons learned in blood. But nobody really talks much about those these days. Most people seek hope and try to pretend the safe zone is the new normal, as if the nightmares didn’t lurk just on the other side of the bridge. Were you part of a failed settlement, its walls torn down by the infected or raiders, leaving you as the only one who made it out? A hunter who relied on instinct and skill to track food, avoiding both the dead and the living? A parent who lost everything but still fights to give your child a chance at life? Or maybe a former scientist or doctor, carrying knowledge that could change lives? The people of Roanoke see outsiders as both a promise and a threat. Some welcome them with open arms, believing they bring fresh skills and new perspectives. Others fear they bring trouble, disease, or hidden enemies. If you choose to write a survivor, their arrival to Roanoke will be part of their backstory—they should be part of the community at least for a few weeks, preferably months.
Locals
Before the Fall, Roanoke was a peaceful coastal town, home to fishermen, farmers, small business owners, and wealthy families who never expected their home to become one of humanity’s last safe havens. When the military took control, many resented it, but they had little choice. Now, civilian leadership has returned, but tensions still simmer between those who just want to rebuild and those who think survival means doing whatever it takes. Are you a fisherman who now also helps the military to patrol the shores, watching for threats from the mainland? A council member trying to navigate the delicate balance between military oversight and civilian freedoms? A doctor, artist or teacher, holding onto the belief that life is about more than just survival? Or maybe you’re just someone who wants their home back, growing wary of the outsiders, ready to act if need be?Locals remember Roanoke before the world ended. Choose this background if you want a character who is deeply tied to the island, probably protective of their home, and often caught in the struggles between past and present.
